The American International School of Johannesburg owns a large property near many of the embassies in Pretoria. We have renovated nine buildings into an all-purpose school with purpose-built classrooms, play areas, computer labs, a music room, art center, a science lab, library, cafeteria, pool with changing rooms, a tennis court, and custodial living facilities.
Our Pre-Kindergarten to grade 6 classrooms are spread through four buildings. The classrooms are designed to support the active, inquiry based teaching methods used at the school. Classrooms have the space and resources to support group work, direct instruction, and individual work.

The cafeteria takes advantage of the fabulous South African weather by providing seating both inside and outside. We serve students a snack each day and our staff prepares hot lunch options or children bring lunch from home.
Our main computer lab supports whole class lessons and provides an opportunity for students to work on projects on a drop-in basis. Computers in the classrooms, library, and another smaller lab provide support for individualized student programs and guided practice. In addition, we also provide laptops for the upper grades.
The Pretoria campus library has grown steadily in the past four years. We have added about 1000 new titles a year. Presently the collection is about 4,500 books. The collection has been deliberately developed to support the curriculum and to complement the language arts program.

Capitol development projects renovated an existing structure to create an art room and a science lab. Classes use the lab during science units and for ongoing science projects and inquiry throughout the year. The most recent development project saw the addition of a pool that is used for swimming classes which take place as part of the regular physical education program. We have also added a dedicated recycling area. Different classes share the responsibility for managing Recycle Fridays.
Our outside play areas provide space for various games and skills practice. The playgrounds are used for physical education classes and recesses. |
