FAQ's (Frequently Asked Questions)

Q.  When should I submit my application to AISJ?
Ideally as soon as your family decides to move to SA is a good time to contact us.  Given that space is often limited, families are encouraged to submit an application as early as possible, although applications will be accepted any time during the school year.  Initially applications and supporting documents can be e-mailed and originals should be hand carried and turned in when you arrive in South Africa.

Q.  Is it necessary for my child to have an interview before acceptance is offered?
No, in most instances, an interview is not required before a student is accepted.  However, an interview or student assessment may be required to determine if AISJ has an appropriate program to meet a student’s needs.  All Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students are automatically assessed.

Q.  Must my child be fluent in English to attend AISJ?
No.  As an international school, AISJ has students representing more than 70 different nationalities.  To support this international population, we offer additional English language support through our English Language Learners (ELL) classes. This support is available through grade 8.

Q.  Does AISJ accept students with special learning needs?
AISJ offers a limited program for students with special learning needs.  To determine if our school meets a child’s needs, parents are encouraged to submit an application as early as possible.  In addition to the application, a recent Psych-Ed (psycho-educational) assessment report and other pertinent records regarding past educational plans and services must be submitted to the Admissions office.

Q.  Is there a school uniform?
No, however there is a dress code that sets forth appropriate campus attire.

Q. What languages are offered at AISJ?

  • K - 5:      Spanish
  • 6 - 12:    Spanish and French

Q.  Do you have bus service?
Yes, the school offers a door-to-door bus service.  It is available for both Johannesburg and Pretoria suburbs.  Johannesburg suburbs included are Birdhaven, Bryanston, Cedar Lakes, Craighall, Dainfern, Dunkeld, Fourways, Fourways Gardens, Houghton, Hurlingham, Illovo, Juskei Park, Killarney, Kyalami Estate, Lonehill, Melrose, Morningside/Duxbury, Oaklands, Parktown, Riverclub, Sandton, Sunninghill.  Pretoria suburbs include Arcadia, Bailey’s Muckleneuk, Brooklyn, Constantia Park, Erasmusrand, Faerie Glen, Groenkloof, Hatfield, Lynwood, Menlo Park, Menlyn, New Muckleneuk, Waterkloof, Waterkloof Ridge.

Q. How is the school year structured?
The school year is made up of two semesters:

  • 1st semester - Second week of August to mid December
  • 2nd semester – Second week of January to 1st week of June

Q. What are the holidays?

  • Summer vacation – approximately the first week in June through the first week in August
  • 1 week in October
  • Winter Break – mid December to 2nd week in January
  • 1 week in March

Q.  What are the school hours at AISJ?

Our Johannesburg Campus Hours:

  • Pre K: 7:40 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. – Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri.
  • Grades K – 12: 7:40 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. – Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri.
  • Pre K to Grade 12: Dismissal of 1:30 p.m. on Wed.

Our Pretoria Campus Hours:

  • Pre K: 7:40 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. – Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri.
  • Grades K – 8: 7:40 a.m. to 2:50 p.m. – Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri.
  • Pre K to Grade 8: Dismissal of 1:30 p.m. on Wed.

Q. Does AISJ offer after school activities?

AISJ offers a wide variety of after school activities for grades 1 to 12.  Bus services at the end of After School activities is provided.

Q.  Does AISJ have a cafeteria?

Yes.  Students can bring their own lunches or purchase a hot lunch.  Hot lunches for Elementary School students are R22, for Middle School students lunches are R25, and for High School students lunches are R30.

Q.  Are there boarding facilities?

AISJ does not offer boarding facilities.  All students are required to reside with their parent or a legal guardian while in attendance.
