The AISJ Board of Directors is a body of nine elected individuals, a representative appointed by the U.S. Ambassador, and the school’s Director. This group is responsible for the long-term interests of the school, such as assuring the school upholds standards for accreditation, is financially sound and secure, and has effective and meaningful operational policies. The Board appoints and supervises the school’s Director and works with the Director regarding the administration of the school.

That’s right! The Director is responsible for implementing School Board Policies and the day-to-day functioning of the school, ensuring that all aspects of the school’s instructional and professional activities adhere to existing policies. The Director hires and supervises the four divisional principals (Elementary, Middle and High School at the Johannesburg campus and campus principal in Pretoria), and is ultimately responsible for all AISJ faculty and staff. The Director also, oversees the campus and its operations.

The Board is made up of nine elected parent representatives, a representative of the U.S. Ambassador (non-voting) and the school Director. The school’s Articles of Incorporation stipulate that at least five voting members must be American citizens. This body develops policies and addresses strategic issues relating to the school, however, it is assisted by the Director’s Office, other operational offices (such as Human Resource, Business, and Admissions Offices), representatives from the faculty, and Parent Teacher Organization (PTO).

The AISJ School Board meets once a month from September through May, with an annual planning retreat in August. Meetings are open to the school community and are held at the High School Library on the Johannesburg campus. In November and April, the Board meets at the Pretoria Campus (in the campus library). Meetings are normally held on the second Monday of the month. All meetings begin at 6:30 pm. Minutes from the open sessions of all Board meetings are posted on the AISJ web site.

The Board has many sub-committees that conduct research, investigate long-term policy questions and carry out strategic planning. There are many opportunities for interested AISJ parents to contribute their expertise and wisdom by participating on such committees. Please contact a current Board member if you have professional expertise that might be of interest to one of these groups (i.e., experience in construction, the financial sector, IT, legal background, marketing, human resources, etc.)

Contact any Board Member and ask to meet with them regarding the work the Board does and the time commitment involved. If it is a good fit for you, look for the call for candidates sometime in January or throughout the school year to fill unexpected vacancies. You will be asked to submit your resume and prepare short, written answers to a series of questions pertaining to the school. The resumes and answers by the candidates are then circulated to all AISJ Parents, who then vote through sealed paper ballots. The elected members are announced at the March Board Meeting (Annual General Meeting). There are usually four to five seats available each year. Board members serve for two years.
