The Ruberto Library specifically serves the needs of Elementary School students and staff by providing high quality, reliable resources and offering instruction in their use. The library also maintains and promotes an extensive collection that supports exploration and growth in reading a variety of literature and genres for all students Pre Kindergarten through Grade 5. All members of the AISJ community are encouraged to use Ruberto Library’s resources - books, periodicals, audiobooks, DVD’s, and online sources. The AISJ libraries have adopted the American Association of School Librarians’ “Standards for the 21st Century Learner” as a framework for collaborating with teachers. These standards are designed so that learners can: “inquire, think critically, and gain knowledge; draw conclusions, make informed decisions, apply knowledge to new situations, and create new knowledge; share knowledge and participate ethically and productively as members of our democratic society; and pursue personal and aesthetic growth.” In the Elementary School Library we also use the Big6 and Super3 information models to structure our research process.
The goal of the Ruberto Library at the American International School of Johannesburg is to ensure that students and faculty are effective, self-reliant, and critical users of ideas and information enabling them to be literate, life-long learners.
AISJ employs one professional librarian and one full time assistant to maintain the Ruberto collections, to assist the community in using the collection and resources, and to ensure the efficient running of the library.
