All high school students are strongly encouraged to get involved in the high school activities program. The High School activity program richly adds to the excitement, fun and spirit on campus. Activities welcome all students and are not just for experienced participants. We are proud of our tradition of giving students with no previous experience the opportunity of participating in an activity for the very first time.  Many students simultaneously participate in multiple activities and faculty sponsors work together with students to avoid conflicts in scheduling.

Educational research shows a positive correlation between involvement in extracurricular activities and academic performance: students who are involved in school activities have greater academic success in the classroom…and this is true at AISJ.

High School students are introduced to the year’s activity program and the faculty sponsors at a one hour Activities Assembly conducted in the afternoon of the second day of school (August 13, 2009).

This Handbook gives an overview of the extracurricular activities high school students may participate in during the year and directions on who to contact for more information.

The foremost requirement of every student involved in extracurricular activities is they must maintain a satisfactory academic record throughout the duration of the activity (see Student-Parent Handbook guidelines).

In addition, students are expected to attend every practice, rehearsal or meeting of an activity and maintain communication with the activity sponsor.  Activities vary in how often they meet after school.  For sports teams practice is usually three times each week of the season.

For further details about any activity, students and parents are encouraged to contact the activity sponsor directly or Brian Kelley. Please know that we look forward to supporting your interest and involvement in AISJ High School Activities in 2009-2010!

HS Vice-Principal  bpkelley@aisj-jhb.com

AISJ operates a “Late Bus” for our students involved in on-campus activities after school. The “Late Bus” departs campus from the gym parking lot and transports students directly to their home. The Late Bus departs at:

Monday
Tuesday

4:30
4:30
5:00
4:00

When AISJ is involved in an activity or sports match after school that takes place off campus, AISJ bus transportation directly home from the event is provided.

For high school weekend and evening activities, buses normally make pick-ups from these central locations.

  • USA Embassy Pretoria
  • Kyalami Estates Front Gate
  • Dainfern Gate William Nicoll Road
  • Fourways Gardens ate
Students who are on Johannesburg bus routes, or any student needing transportation from a location different from these four pick up locations, need to sign up in the high school office at least one day before transportation is required. The Transport department will then produce a list of any special pick-ups and make sure this is communicated to the students involved. For bus transport home from weekend and special activities, students are taken home to their door.

The high school has a proud history of community service and every student is encouraged to participate in an AISJ community service effort. The goodwill and personal growth from community service is part of the AISJ student character.  Various outreach projects are organized throughout the school year.  Students will be invited to participate as these activities are planned.

Ms. Sheaffer coordinates most of the high school’s community service activities in conjunction with the sponsors of National Honor Society and the IB CAS program.

The National Honor Society (NHS) under the sponsorship and supervision of the National Association of Secondary Schools endeavors to appropriately acknowledge students who demonstrate outstanding accomplishments in the areas of scholarship, character, leadership and service. Hence membership to the National Honor Society is both an honor as well as a commitment to maintain and broaden the qualities displayed by students in achieving excellence in academics, character, leadership and service.

The National Honor Society was founded in 1921, in an endeavor to create an institution that acknowledges and encourages academic achievement while simultaneously developing other characteristics pertinent to individuals in a democratic society. The first chapter at AISJ started in 1998. It has grown into a prestigious institution to be affiliated with.

The members of the NHS at AISJ will commit to one or more service projects for each year. It is imperative and an accepted requirement upon selection of the members that all members will dutifully and purposefully participate in these projects. These projects aim to:
Fulfill a need within the community,

    • Elicit the support of the administration and the faculty;
    • Be well planned, organized and executable and;
    • Be appropriate and educationally defensible.

We hope all of our high school students take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Hiking Club and experience the beauty of the South African landscape and this country’s diverse environments. There likely will be 4-5 hiking activities organized during the school year, and already planed are these hikes:

  • August 22, 2009, Day Hike Groenkloof Nature Reserve, Pretoria
  • September 17 - 20, 2009, Blyde River Canyon Hike (3 nights)
  • November 21, 2009,
  • April 23 – 26, 2010, Drakensberg Mountains Hike (3 nights)

Students are invited to participate in any of overnight and day hikes organized by this club.  (It is not necessary for a student to participate in all of these activities.)

During 2009-2010, AISJ will take a one year break from attempting a summit of Mt Kilimanjaro.  For the previous five consecutive years we have organized a Kili Team.  We are using this year’s hiking program as a foundation for the sixth Kili Team which will attempt to summit Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania in March 2011.

Students interested in participating in any of the Hiking Club Activities should see Mr. Burgess or Ms Blijdenstein.

Faculty Sponsor:  Ms. Katherine Van Niekerk  kvanniekerk@aisj-jhb.com and Ms Belinda O’brien  bobrien@aisj-jhb.com

The Two Oceans Challenge Club is an exciting new addition to the high school activities program this year.  This club provides an opportunity for students to participate in regular running /jogging activities after school and in weekend South African road races. This year the club has targeted running in the Soweto Marathon Day’s 10 km run (November 1, 2009) and then a culminating activity with participation in the world famous Two Oceans Marathon’s shorter run, the half marathon run section (Cape Town, April 3, 2010).  A student can join and participate in the regular training session of this club without choosing to enter these events (but why not?).

Students interested in participating in The Two Oceans Challenge Club should see Ms Van Niekerk or Ms. O’brien.

While it is not part of the activities program, each year AISJ’s physical education faculty (K-12) organize of a day of fitness and fun running known as the AISJ Community 5 Km Run. Each year more than 250 students, parents and friends participate in the 5 K (and our youngest students participate in shorter events tailored to their age).  The AISJ community of students and parents and friends is invited to join us again this year for the 14th Annual AISJ Community 5Km Run, Thursday morning, March 11, 2009.  For more information, contact the Head of PE, Mr. John Amosa.

AISJ’s  Athletic Director, Mr John Amosa (jamosa@aisj-jhb.com), directly oversees the entire high school competitive sports program and he should be contacted directly for the most up to date information. Also, we encourage students and parents to contact the coaches of any sport that interests them.

All high school students are encouraged and welcomed to try out for an AISJ team. In most cases, there is a place for anyone willing to make a commitment to the team. Many of our athletes play on more than one team throughout the year. Our teams though are not just for experienced athletes. We are proud of our tradition of giving students with no previous experience the opportunity of learning a sport and playing on a team for the first time while at AISJ.

The accomplishments and efforts of AISJ student athletes and teams are a great source of pride and spirit in our school. During the year AISJ girls' and boys' teams will compete against other schools in close to 100 matches through various leagues and tournaments. The majority of these matches take place at AISJ, in Johannesburg or Pretoria.

AISJ organizes some of the best school tournaments in South Africa and these are well supported by local schools. These events in volleyball, basketball and soccer are the traditional highlights of our sports year. We hope the school community will continue their enthusiastic support by coming to the school for these daylong events.

Greatly adding to the excitement of the sports program is AISJ’s membership in ISSEA. AISJ is a founding school of the International Schools of Southern and Eastern Africa. ISSEA; other member international schools are in Harare, Zimbabwe; Nairobi Kenya; Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania; Windhoek, Namibia, and Kampala, Uganda. Last year (March 2009) AISJ hosted over 100 athletes and coaches for the ISSEA basketball championships and our boys and girls volleyball and soccer teams travelled to Ethiopia in November 2008.  For more information see the ISSEA section on this Website.

Concluding the year in sports, a sports awards evening banquet is organized, this year Thursday, May 20, 2010. Every competitive athlete, parents and friends are encouraged to attend this special evening.

Throughout the year, the sports schedule of practices and matches is published and this information can be found on the high school sports bulletin board, the weekly school newsletter and on the AISJ web site.

Volleyball Team
Boys’ Team Coach:       Mr. Mr. Tim Musgrove    tmusgrove@aisj-jhb.com
Girls’ Team Coach:       Ms. Palesa Sekhonyana   psekhonyana@aisj-jhb.com

Volleyball is the main sport of the first season of the year. AISJ has a strong tradition in volleyball, a sport that is unique to the South African sport culture. Throughout September and October, AISJ participates in friendly matches with 8-10 schools from Johannesburg and Pretoria. Having played many of these schools for a number of years has heightened tradition. The highlight of our volleyball season is the annual AISJ volleyball tournament. This all day tournament will be our 14th annual and we can expect over 40 teams to participate. The AISJ tournament is always conducted on the third Saturday of October (October 17, 2009).

Volleyball is an ISSEA sport and selected players from our girls and boys teams will travel to Nairobi, Kenya to play in the combined volleyball & soccer championships November 3-8, 2009. The ISSEA squad will be selected by October 2, 2009.

Soccer
Boys' Coach:                Mr. Funky Raethe    fralethe@aisj-jhb.com
Girls' Coach:                Mr. John Amosa       jamosa@aisj-jhb.com

Soccer is the most popular sport on campus. To quench the thirst for this game a unique soccer club season has been created. In September, the first meetings of the soccer clubs take place through intramural sports. This early beginning introduces players to each other and to the coaches, and is the beginning of try-outs for the ISSEA six a side team. By October 2, 2009, nine girls and nine boys will be selected to the ISSEA teams for the November championships.

Soccer clubs have ad hoc meetings throughout the year and formal practice for the competitive “eleven a side season” begins after the conclusion of basketball season (practice begins the middle of March). AISJ forms multiple boys and girls teams, playing in the under 19 years and under 16/15 years divisions.  Soccer matches begin in April and end May 31, 2009.

Swim Team
Coaches:  Mr John Amosa    jamosa@aisj-jhb.com  and Ms Lisa Hungerford    lhungerford@aisj-jhb.com

By November 1, when the weather warms up, the Senior Swim Team (age 13 years and above) begins pre-season training. AISJ participates in a competitive league season during January to March. Senior meets are conducted on Thursdays.

As some swimmers are involved in other activities, senior swimmers are required to make a plan with coach Amosa to attend any two training sessions each week on either Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

Basketball
Boys' Coach:    Mr. Lane Hunt      lhunt@aisj-jhb.com
Girls' Coach:   Mr. Ayodele Harrison    aharrison@aisj-jhb.com

Basketball is the main sport of our second sports season, and it is fair to say basketball is the most exciting sport on campus throughout the year. Part of this is due to the fact that games in the gym, considered by most to be the best indoor school facility in the country, are great times to demonstrate the school spirit and support for our teams.

Try-outs and 10-12 practices for AISJ boys and girls basketball teams begin early in November, right after the ISSEA tour, and continue into the first week of December. AISJ forms multiple boys and girls teams, playing in the under 19 years and under 16/15 years divisions.  Games take place in January through March. Practice in January through to the end of the season is three times a week. Matches take place after school and on Saturday mornings.

The highlight of the season is AISJ two-day tournament for boys and girls' teams February 26 and 27, 2010.

Basketball is an ISSEA sport and the 2010 tournament is to be hosted by the
Harare International School March 3-7, 2010.

Tennis Team
Coach:              Mr. Johan Kriel    jkriel@aisj-jhb.com

From early November through March, AISJ has an active high school tennis club training on Mondays and Thursdays. The AISJ team participates in Johannesburg league matches against other schools during January to March.  Tennis matches take place on Monday after school.

14th Annual Volleyball Tournament                  Saturday, October 17, 2009
12th Annual Basketball Tournament                  Fri. & Sat., February 26 & 27, 2010
14th Annual Boys’ Soccer Tournament Saturday, May 8, 2010
5nth Annual Girls’ Soccer Tournament              Saturday, May 15, 2010

As the sports calendar comes to a close and AISJ has participated in more than 100 competitions with other schools in South Africa and throughout Africa, it is time to recognize the efforts of our middle and high school students and the coaches. Athletes and parents are invited to attend this evening dinner and award banquet on Thursday, May 20, 2010. Student athletes attend free of charges.

ISSEA is the acronym for the organization of the International Schools of Southern and Easter Africa. ISSEA was founded in October 1999 as an athletic conference involving these six schools:

  • AISJ
  • Harare International School (HIS)
  • International Community School, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (ICS)
  • International School of Kenya (ISK)
  • International School of Tanzania (IST)
  • International School of Uganda (ISU)

ISSEA championships take place twice a year. ISSEA championships are exciting opportunities for our student athletes to meet other international students in Africa and to compete with them.
This year AISJ is invited to participate in these two ISSEA events:

  • International School Kenya hosts the Soccer & Volleyball Championships, November 3-8, 2009
  • Harare International School hosts the Basketball Championships, March 3-7, 2010.

Participation in ISSEA events is not a prerequisite for earning a place on any AISJ team. Due to ISSEA guidelines limiting ream roster, not every team member automatically ears a position on an ISSEA traveling squad.

Middle School students may try out for “high school” teams in any sport. The number of positions available on high school teams to middle school students is limited. Students and parents should be aware that our high school teams compete against South African schools athletes in the under 19 years and under 16 years divisions. Further, training on high school teams is much more rigorous than in middle school competitive programs.

AISJ does compete against other schools in age group competition appropriate to middle school students. Such completion opportunities take place in swimming, boys’ and girls’ basketball and boys’ and girls’ soccer. Often MS girls earn positions on AISJ under 16 years girls’ high school teams.

More relevant to many middle school students are activities in the Middle School After School Program. These sports are intramural and do not involve competition with other schools. Contact the Middle School for more information about the MS after school program.
