Since 2003, AISJ has annually sent a team of students, teachers and parents to Tanzania to attempt a summit of the Uhuru peak of Kilimanjaro. At 5 895 meters high, it is the highest stand alone peak in Africa and requires much preparation. Once the team of teachers is selected by previous teachers who have climbed, and the team of students is selected by the teacher team for the year, the training involves walking, walking, walking and learning how to drink LOTS of water. With two training hikes to prepare them (one in the Drakensberg and one in the Magaliesberg), teams are well-prepared to spend their spring breaks on the slopes on this majestic mountain.
