Special Events

High School students will be introduced to the year’s activity program and the faculty sponsors at a one hour Activities Assembly conducted in the afternoon of the second day of school.

Beginning the second week of school, students are invited to stay after school to play intramural sports.  IM’s are non-competitive introductions to the competitive sports that AISJ offer throughout the year.  IM’s are not team practices, but are organized by faculty for students to stay after school and make some new friends and re-unite with old friends in a sporting environment, get some exercise and experience, and hopefully to motivate students to join an AISJ sports team.

For seven consecutive years AISJ hast been the host school for America’s professional basketball league, the National Basketball Associations (NBA’s) Basketball Without Borders Camp.  AISJ students do not participate in this week long camp which is organized by the NBA and FIBA to develop basketball skills in young players representing countries from across the African continent.  While we do not directly participate, students are able to observe the camp and NBA players and coaches throughout this exciting week.

During each semester the HS student council organizes a week dedicated to generating school spirit and excitement.  Spirit week is a series of thematic days when students dress to the topic of the day and participate in various fun events, mostly conducted during the lunch break.  Spirit Weeks usually coincides with the week leading up to AISJ’s participation in a special sporting event.

AISJ celebrates campus wide the international diversity of our community.  Students come to school in traditional dress from their home country and participate in a Parade of Nations with fellow students from their homeland.  A culminating celebration of international food helps make this one of the most popular days on campus.

Student life in the high school culminates with the first semester’s biggest social activity, the thematic Homecoming Dance. This much looked forward to event is organized by the HS student council.  Students dress up for this dance and are entertained by a local DJ.  The faculty chaperoned Homecoming Dance takes place in the  thematically decorated gym and every high school student is encouraged to attend (there is a small ticket fee, AISJ provides bus transportation to and from Homecoming).

During the early days of January the high school celebrates the academic and student achievements of the first semester at a student awards assembly.  Honor Roll students are recognized along with the students from each grade level who have demonstrated the Best Effort and Most Outstanding Citizenship during the first semester. The high school’s formal dance of the year is called the Junior-Senior Prom. Traditionally, the Junior class organizes this event that somewhat honors the final days of the Senior Class at AISJ.  The Junior-Senior Prom takes place at venue off campus and is chaperoned by faculty.  All Juniors and Seniors are automatically invited to the Prom (there is a ticket charge) and other high school grade levels may attend as the invited guest of a junior or senior. (School Bus transportation is not normally requested for attending the Prom).

This is AISJ’s annual week long festival of the arts all across campus.  Student work is displayed in an Art Gallery that takes over the gym; student musical and theatre performances are scheduled throughout the week; local artists are invited to campus.  A faculty committee plans and organizes this event and student input is most welcomed. Students participate in the festival through special assemblies and pre-arranged visits.  Classes are conducted as normal as possible.

The high school arranges for a specialist trainer/ teacher to come to campus for 10 days to deliver specific preparation for grade 11 and/or 12 students taking USA College/University entrance Exam: The SAT.  The SAT exam targeted by this preparation course takes place on the first Saturday of May. This SAT Prep service is voluntary and requires a significant student fee.  Classes are after school and on two weekends.  For more information contact Ms Keenan, Director of High School Student Services.

During the final week that seniors are on campus, the entire high school celebrates the achievements of the school year at an assembly called the Senior Awards Assembly.  Students, who have performed the best in each of the academic disciplines, across all grade levels, are recognized.  AISJ’s most prestigious perpetual awards, along with the graduating classes Valedictorian Salutatorian, are acknowledged.  This is a wonderful lead up to graduation day and an assembly we encourage parents to attend.

This is a most important day in our annual calendar, one where AISJ proudly honors the seniors, their parents, families and friends.  All high school students are also invited and encouraged to attend graduation. Witnessing the achievement of fellow students graduating is a source of motivation for younger high school students as they end the current school year and prepare for their next.

On this day students take care of the business of “checking-out”, which means doing everything that might be required for a student to end the year will all accounts cleared: returning school books (or proving books are still in possession), reconciling library book returns and sports uniforms returns, student locker clearing and lock return, clearing any other business required in order to  end the year with no outstanding obligations and hence qualify to received the end of year report card and/or school transcript.
