Middle level students develop skills, self-confidence, and self-awareness more successfully if they get involved and participate in a rich array of activities.  These activities also help students to gain new friends, explore new interests, and have fun.  In addition, participation in activities outside of academics builds community, pride, and school spirit.

Through each of these programs, we emphasize that participation in student life is a privilege and we encourage all students to take part. We have high expectations for behaviour, commitment, academic achievement, and making healthy choices.

At the beginning of the year students will receive an activity schedule which clearly outlines the commitment to each activity and sport.  Students are to check the activity schedule carefully and make choices based on their willingness and ability to participate in every session.  Students are expected to commit to activities that they join and attendance for all sessions is mandatory.  They will stay in the activity until the end of the session and participate in the culminating activity unless there are medical or other extenuating circumstances.

Monday & Thursday sessions are from 3:10 to 4:45 (late bus leaves campus at 5:00 p.m.)
Tuesday & Wednesday sessions are from 3:10 to 4:15 (late bus leaves campus at 4:30 p.m.)
Friday sessions are from 1:45 to 3:45 (late bus leaves campus at 4:00 p.m.)

Saturday sessions are to be announced by sponsor/coach.

AISJ’s Student Council is called Indaba.  A well-used term in South Africa; Indaba is defined as an important conference, gathering, or meeting of principal people.  Our Indaba serves as a communication and organizational link between the students and adults in the Middle School. This group of elected students is in charge of planning and implementation of student activities including socials and special programs/assemblies.  Indaba meets once a week during Imbizo and lunch; however, other meetings may be scheduled as necessary.  Indaba has a four member Executive Council which is elected in May of the previous school year.  The executive council serves for a full year.  In addition two students from each grade level are chosen each semester by their peers as grade level representatives (six in total.)  Grade level representatives serve for a semester.

SWAT is a Middle School task force of students who have been highly trained in various computer programs and hardware used at the school.  They help run the Computer Lab, trouble shoot and help teachers and students with all things technology related.    Potential SWAT members apply and interview for a spot on this leadership team.

If you work better in a supervised, structured environment where a teacher can answer your questions, and help you organize your work - then Homework Club on Monday and Wednesday afternoons is the place for you. Any student who needs a quiet place for an hour or two a week of study is welcome. Additionally, if a student's progress shows a need for extra time, assistance, or organization, they can be assigned by a teacher, parent, or counselor to the homework club.

Math Counts is a US based organization whose purpose is to “heighten student interest in mathematics by making math achievement as challenging, exciting and prestigious as a school sport.”  Students who join Math Counts will practice work as a team to solve equations and word problems and compete in a culminating competition with other schools in the area.

Students who participate in the speech and debate club will acquire important skills that will help them succeed in their academic career as well as in life.  In a supportive and non-threatening environment, students will use logic, critical listening, organization and speaking skills to explore a variety of topics.  Students will practice and use their speaking skills by participating in plays, poetry jams, and extemporaneous speaking sessions.  They will learn how to stand up confidently in front of people and how to make persuasive arguments.  They will also learn the procedures for a formal debate and work toward exhibiting their skills by competing against other debate teams within the Middle School and eventually with teams from local schools.

The Middle School production provides students interested in drama/theatre the opportunity to participate in a stimulating and meaningful group activity – students and teachers come together to learn, perform, and celebrate. Students will have opportunities for on-stage roles or backstage support.

Jazz Band is a year round activity/band open to Grade 7 and 8 band students. While it is open to all band students must be able to display a degree of proficiency on their instrument, and be dedicated to practice. Also there will only be enough spots for a maximum of 2 drummers, and 2 bass players. Students will be required to attend all rehearsals and there will be at least 2 major performances. (One at the end of the 1st semester, and one at the end of the year.) Students will also need to be prepared to play at other performances/events which may occur during the year.

Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to participate in a number of social events planned and implemented by the Student Council Indaba. These are held after school and they are marked in the calendar as “Middle School Social.”
