Throughout the year, the community of AISJ Pretoria gathers to celebrate, eat and enjoy each others company. The special days are:
Every Friday is Recycle Friday!
The Green Team: grades 4,5 and 6, are responsible for monitoring and helping everyone recycle before Morning Circle each Friday.
We can recycle these things:
CLEAN cans both aluminium and steel
CLEAN plastic bottles and containers of all numbers
Plastic lids are OK too
All types of paper and cardboard
Magazines and newspapers
Printer cartridges
Not plastic wrap
And remember
clean, clean, clean
Pre-sort to save time
Together we can help protect and improve the environment!
What better way to start a new school year than to join in the warmth of a South African braai (barbeque). The back to school evening serves two important purposes. First, it is a time to connect with old friends and new. Students love being at school after dark and the flashlight tag game has become a start of the year ritual. Parents have the opportunity to talk and share a meal with members of the Pretoria campus community. Secondly, it gives parents an inside the classroom experience. Teachers share the class schedule, give an overview of the year, and explain the mysteries of homework. The back to school braai gets the year off to a great start.
At the end of the swim program, the students display their new swimming skills to their teachers, peers and parents.
All our Star Shows feature a Star Drawing. During the year teachers give out stars to students for showing the Pretoria Big Five. Our Big Five do not have teeth and claws. They are respect, responsibility, cooperation, perseverance, and friendship. These are the social and emotional qualities necessary to realize the school’s mission and live up to our belief to honor and respect diversity. At each Star Show we draw 10 stars from the big box of stars. The winners get to choose a book. It is a fun way to recognize achievement and contribution within our community. Parents are invited to all Star Shows and their participation is important in making these events come alive for the children.
Halloween Star Show
Halloween is all about fun and the Halloween Star Show is no exception. Costumes, a trick-or-treat parade and fun games are the order of the day.
Thanksgiving Star Show
This celebration has turkey and all the trimmings and much more. This event is tied to the curriculum unit the school is working on at the time. This is also about good food and sharing learning. Student presentations and demonstrations are a key part of this Star Show (this year students displayed their inventions related to simple machines).
International Star Show
This Star Show comes at the end of a month-long international studies unit. It is a celebration and investigation into the richness of our diversity. Students present projects about their home cultures and parents and staff members bring food from their own countries and we literally eat our way around the world.
Out on a Limb for Justice Star Show
This Star Show has become one of our favourite events of the year. It is a powerful example of our potential to contribute to community. The Out on a Limb for Justice event comes at the end of a 5-week unit that looks at problems and issues around the world and the people who have taken risks to help solve them. This is a unit on the democratic process and the importance of making an informed choice. Each grade chooses a particular issue and an organization that is working to solve it. The classes lobby and campaign for their group. At the Star Show all members of the school community vote for the group the school should support for the new year.
Arts fest
This Star Show is a series of lunch-hour concerts. During the week of Arts Fest the regular schedule is replaced by workshops, demonstrations, activities, and projects all featuring the arts. Drama, dance, music, mosaics, drawing, ceramics, and much, much more. The concerts are set up picnic-in-the-park style. This Star Show series highlights the empowered seeker of personal fulfillment in the school’s mission.
End of Year Star Show
The Primary Play is only one of the events in this Star Show. There is the Memory Books to pass out, the good-bye plates to pass on to families who are leaving, and students final projects to share. This Star Show is about ending the year and saying good-bye with grace and style.
Fun Freaky Friday Star Shows:
On months when there is no Star Show we take the last Friday of the month to focus on cooperation and team building. The students and all staff members are divided into 5 teams (The Big Five) and we play cooperative games and challenges.
The Pretoria campus prides itself on the annual drama and music production. This event takes place once a year during the December period and is a great opportunity for learners to be part of a theatre production which involves learning the script and songs and showcasing their talent in front of their peers and parents. Rehearsals form part of the Drama after school activity program during the first half of the year.
