In November of 2010, AISJ purchased a new site for its Pretoria Campus. The new location allowed the school to expand classrooms, programs and activities.
The new site is conveniently located close to two of the major housing developments in Pretoria -- Silver Lakes and Woodhill. It is also easily accessible by the N1 from the Atterbury off ramp. The school was extremely fortunate to find this perfect new school site and we continue to be excited about the opportunities and possibilities for development.
The magnificently landscaped property is situated on a five-acre plot and gives the school a spacious feeling. A campus redevelopment plan provides for both an Elementary and Middle School in a Pre-Kindergarten to Grade 8 setting with a possible capacity in the future of approximately 300 students. The first two phases of the campus development plan included 16 classrooms, a science lab, library, undercover assembly area, cafeteria, soccer field, a pool, and extensive play areas. The next phases of the development plan include tennis and basketball courts, a gym, upgraded playgrounds for the lower and upper primary grades, as well as additional facilities for music and drama. The basic description does not do justice to the site. Numerous old trees provide plenty of shade as well as invite the kind of school-without-walls learning opportunity that the South African climate is perfect for. The Middle School classrooms open onto a long covered porch or “stoep” that faces a quiet garden setting. Middle School students who visited at our first Open House were thrilled that they would have their own private reading and study area. At the heart of the school is a huge thatched lapa with a stage at one end. Our new campus has both the separate spaces and facilities to accommodate different developmental needs as well as spaces to allow the school to come together as a learning community. This ensures our school retains the same charm and welcoming feel that members of the community have prized from the start .
It is hard to believe that in August 2002 AISJ opened the current Pretoria Campus with modest ambitions and a total enrollment of 14 students in Kindergarten to Grade Two in a single building. The Pretoria campus now has just under 200 students and it is predicted that this number will continue to increase by over 10% for the next 5 – 6 years. The AISJ school board has committed to developing the Pretoria campus’ academic and activities programs so that they support the school’s overall vision. In academics, sports, and the arts we seek to inspire the imaginations of all students and provide them with the skills and understanding to take challenges and opportunities with boldness and confidence. This emphasis puts individual attention and motivation for learning at the heart of all we do.
