FROM THE SCHOOL DIRECTOR

Welcome to the AISJ website! My name is Andy Page-Smith and this is my sixth year as the School Director of the American International School of Johannesburg. I have been an administrator in international schools for the past 21 years with previous overseas leadership roles in Kuwait, Vietnam, Qatar and Hong Kong. I am accompanied by my wife, Merris, and daughter, Sidhonie, a 11th grader – we are all thrilled to be here at this amazing school and in such a vibrant and exciting country.

I am very fortunate to inherit the leadership of a school founded 32 years ago in the best traditions of American education but a school that is also truly international in practice and demographics. At our 2013-2014 International Day celebration, we had 107 nationalities represented within its student body. I am also fortunate to lead a highly committed staff of local and international teachers, administrators, and support staff who make the school such a warm and welcoming environment for students and parents. The teachers - many recruited from around the world - add to the diverse richness of what really makes the school and South Africa such an exciting place.

AISJ is a very ‘happening’ place - supporting families and best educational practices. Low student/teacher ratios, personal care, and commitment, together with a broad-based quality program designed to meet the needs of all of its students are among its trademarks.

In October of 2010 the school, through a community-wide initiative called “Voices to Vision”, totally overhauled its mission and core values as well as developing a critical future vision.

Together with the Board of Directors, I am committed to strengthening the quality programs already on offer and the key initiatives highlighted through that process that we as a community need to work on to enhance and improve the school. In May 2013, we launched the next stage of our Strategic Plan with specific goals and objectives related to our four strategic priorities. The school has already undertaken an ambitious building redevelopment program with the adoption of a five-phase master plan of its Johannesburg and Pretoria Campus. However, a key element of my work over the next few years will be the work in the area of teaching and learning. Our aim is to ensure that the American International School of Johannesburg is always recognized as a one of the leading international schools in the world and we believe the quality of our programs, facilities, and relationships will determine that.

2016 - 2017 promises to be a big year as the school community continues to work together to consolidate the great things happening at the school - while also striving, and strategically planning - to take the American International School of Johannesburg to an aspiring new level of educational quality and performance.

Whether you are a prospective parent or an educator looking for a new challenge, I encourage you to explore our website. Please do not hesitate to contact us should you wish to find out more.
