Service Learning Activities

 

Red Cross 

SARCS is an organization which is focused on addressing the numerous aspects of healthcare and disaster management within South Africa. SARCS offers a Youth Volunteer Program that provides students with the opportunity to make a positive impact in the South African community as well as to express their interest in healthcare and its counterparts. It also stimulates personal growth by allowing students to undertake new challenges and develop new skills.

Thokozani

Thokozani, meaning CELEBRATION in Zulu, is a place of joy and safety for the children who go there. They are nurtured with food and love as well as being educated and prepared for elementary school. Opened in 2004 by Ms. Lizah, the preschool originally served 30 children. Today, almost 150 children attend and there is a long waiting list. It is a success story but willing students are needed who enjoy working with children to support their learning as well as working with community partners to identify and effectively and sustainably meet their needs.

Afrika Tikkun - Simunye

SIMUNYE Music service project, where kids get to learn and perform different aspects of music. Students who are a part of this project are able to experience music and perform in front of their peers. The project uses recycled material in creating musical instruments with available resources. The ages of the participants are between 10-12 year old, and we do a variety of activities such as musical chairs, musical statues and other fun games.

 

SASSY

The South African Service Summit for Youth (SASSY) is a service conference founded at AISJ in 2014 with the goal of empowering students across South Africa by building a network of over 100 socially engaged students working together on local solutions to national South African issues. The SASSY conference consists of two days of interactive, student-led workshops, symposium panels, and motivational expert speakers as well as an off-campus service day to transform ideas into action.

 

 

Iterele Science

This service combines academic work with a hands-on learning experience to South African Grade 11 Physical Science students. The students are offered workshops planned around learning experiences relevant to the South African curricula to help build confidence, competence and ensure that the students are well prepared for their Matric examinations. AISJ Grade 11 and 12 students plan, resource and deliver lessons to Grade 11 Physical Science students from Diepsloot and Lanseria in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The activity proves mutually beneficial for both Service Providers and Service Partners as the learning is shared and is often synergistic.

 

Shumbashaba

Shumbashaba Horses Helping People is a community organization that believes in the healing power of horses. Shumbashaba offers comprehensive equine assisted therapy programs where horses are used to facilitate growth, learning and healing for people with disabilities, victims of violence, neglect or trauma, as well as to youth at risk within socio-economically disadvantaged communities. Students will be engaging in horse care, and general yard maintenance, thereby play a viable role in assisting in the upkeep of the organization. Opportunities for getting involved in the therapy and initiating and leading projects are available.

 

Executive Council

Students oversee different areas of Service Learning (called “departments”), such as: public relations (handles Service Learning events, guests, or appearances in the school newspaper, Izindaba); fundraising (handles all the fundraising events, in collaboration with other 3rdparties); Service Learning partners (keeps a sustainable relationship with all of our Service Learning “3rd party” partners, oversees the student leaders who are involved in a Service Learning project with) and admin (oversees the media and the tech representatives at different service learning events, and takes care of administrative business of the Executive Council).

 

JHB Wildlife Vet

This project develops knowledge of wildlife rehabilitation practices as well as fundraising practices in service of the JHB Wildlife Vet which is non-profit organisation that exclusively treats small to medium wildlife free of charge. They will also have the opportunity to learn about rehabilitation in the form of workshops that will run throughout the school year. The JHB Wildlife Vet works with Ecosolutions and Friends of Free Wildlife.

 

 

 

Reforestation

The reforestation project is aimed at teaching environmental sustainability, and does direct action by growing indigenous trees in association with Food and Trees for Africa organization, ready for Arbour month in September.

 

 

 

 

 

Philile

Philile’s objective is to establish early childhood development centres (pre-schools) in disadvantaged communities, running programs that are aimed at the physical, cognitive, emotional, spiritual and social development of children. Philile does this through the support of sponsors and by employing and training teachers from the local

 

communities.

Garden Squad

Our community gardening service activity is on campus, as well as in ES and Pretoria campus. Our aim is to grow sustainable gardens to provide produce to share with our community. If you like to make a difference in our environment, through getting your hands dirty; composting, planting, and helping others, this service activity is for you!

 

 

Building Hope

This is a student led service group and approaches service by collaborating with other AISJ service projects. The projects response to our service partner needs by building equipment for example, tables, desk, etc. The project uses recycled materials.

 

 

 

Amanda Wethu

Amandla Awethu is a new service that will be helping very smart students in Diepsloot find academic scholarships. This service will empower the Diepsloot community and potentially change the lives of the students within it. Additionally, this service has something for everyone: you can tutor students, help find the scholarships or even help fundraise for stationery and other schooling equipment.

 

Afrika Tikkun - Tech 

The aim of this service group is to get young girls, boys, men and women to work with technology. The aim is to get the students to grasp basic to advanced concepts involved in using computers and acquire skills which will help them improve their digital literacy. 

 

 

RuFR

Gift of the Givers are a reputable, long serving organization that not only responds to disaster situations but has more than 20 active programs locally. Some activities and projects are short-term (crisis, disaster, etc) and many are long-term needs (food distribution, sanitary towels, education, etc).
AISJ supports their efforts with the collection and sorting of clothing/food/water/essentials, fundraising, crisis response, advocacy and awareness campaigns, etc.

Project Dignity

The aim of this project is to educate teenagers in our local community about sexual health; in particular pregnancy, menstruation and HIV. Our Diploma Biologists will be running workshops, handing out information and raising funds. The major goal to meet the needs in our community is improving personal and sexual health for young adults in Diepsloot.

 

Friends of Free Wildlife

Rescued animals receive the appropriate treatment and then are released back into their natural habitats. Human contact is kept to a minimum and only the trained staff are allowed access to the animals. AISJ students’ role at Free Wildlife is to help with the maintenance of the centre, such as cleaning, repairing and painting the cages. Our students are also exposed to the process of how to release the animals back into the wild.

 

Woodrock Animal Shelter

Woodrock Animal Rescue is located in Midrand and they rescue, rehabilitate and rehome rescued animals. They are committed to helping animals in need, and being a voice for those who do not have one. AISJ students volunteer their services by feeding, socializing, by walking and playing with the animals. Students also clean out kennels and catteries and assist where needed, e.g repairing fences and kennels and / or garden to remove unwanted weeds.

 

AISA GISS

At the end of January, AISJ will go to Tanzania (IST) for AISA GISS similar to the size of our ISSEA events for sport, where students from all over Africa come to listen to key note speakers, solve global and local issues and share service projects which inspire communities. Sharing ideas, building relationships, and empowering the youth to make change – these are three fundamental principles specific to the AISA Global Issues Service Summit (max 10 students and cost involved)

The activity proves mutually beneficial for both Service Providers and Service Partners as the learning is shared and is often synergistic.

Iterele English

This service combines academic work with a hands-on learning experience to South African Grade 10 and 11 English students. The students are offered workshops planned around learning experiences relevant to the South African curricula to help build confidence, competence and ensure that the students are well prepared for their Matric examinations. AISJ High School students plan, resource and deliver lessons to Grade 10 and 11 English students from Diepsloot in English. The activity proves mutually beneficial for both Service Providers and Service Partners as the learning is shared and is often synergistic.

Global & Local Advocacy

Global & Local Advocacy is an important service where students find ways to act locally to raise awareness about issues of global importance and help make students in the AISJ community more aware of the human, environmental and animal rights violations that occur daily in the world. Through the use of social media, creativity and technology, students generate awareness and advocate for those without a voice around many Human, Environmental and Animal Rights social issues.

CHOC

Each year we fundraise for CHOC through the annual sprayaton to bring about awareness to Cancer and how it affects us all.

 

 

 

 

Sunflower Fund

In support of the Sunflower Fund for Leukemia our whole school community buy topes to support the organization.
