MS Weekly Principal Update November 8, 2019

November 8, 2019

Dear Parents,

Thank you for reading this week’s news from the Middle School.  It has been eerily quiet in the Middle this week with 6th and 7th graders away for their CWW trips.   I know that the 8th graders have enjoyed having the run of the place to themselves, but they will need to adjust to sharing again next week.

As for Grade 6 and Grade 7 CWW, all reports indicated that the week in Blyde River was successful and that many memories were created.   Students and teachers had to deal with some hot days, but I know that they all enjoyed their experiences learning and recreating in the area.   That said, I am happy to have everyone safely back on campus.  It is always a great feeling when the busses roll into campus and students are safely reconnected with their families.    Thank you again to all of the teachers who supported the Grade 8 CWW experience

Grade 6:              Ms. Kaplan, Ms. Collins, Ms. Evans, Ms. Moller, Mr. Kader, Mr. Hills, & Ms. Leet

Grade 7:              Ms. Tucker, Ms. Arnott, Mr. Cohen, Mr. Bellamy, Mr. Balthazor, & Ms. Wood

We started season two of co-curricular activities this week with many students involved with soccer, swimming, rugby, service learning, board games, and many other offerings.  After a week off, it is good to have our campus buzzing after school again.

Of course the big event this coming week is the premiere of the MS/HS musical, “Matilda.”   It should be great show.   Good luck to the many, many Middle School students involved in the show.  They have been practicing and working hard over many months.  Thanks for the efforts of many Middle School staff – Ms. Willis, Ms. Lillis, M.s Whaley, Ms. Berghahn, Ms. Wood, Ms. Gomez, Mr. Hart, Ms. Palmer, and Mr. Balthazor. They have all done a lot to support the show.

Middle School students will be treated to a sneak preview of “Matilda” on Tuesday, November 12th from 12:05 – 12:25 p.m.  I also hope that many students and parents will find time to attend one of the three shows.  Tickets are 100 rand and can be purchased in the MS Office in advance.  If available, tickets will also be sold outside the Theater before showtimes.  Performances for “Matilda” are as follows:

·        Thursday, November 14 @ 3:15 p.m. (5:30 late busses will run that day)

·        Friday, November 15 @ 6:00 p.m.

·        Saturday, November 16 @ 1:30 p.m.

On Friday, we will have an assembly Friday, November 15th from 1:30 – 2:50 p.m. to celebrate CWW trips as well as to recognize Season 1 Middle School student-athletes.  The assembly will take placed in the FAC and parents are welcome to attend.  FYI, seating is limited in the FAC venue.

On Saturday, members of our Middle School Student Council and Middle School teachers will be attending the annual Christmas Party at Chris Hani Hospital.   I look forward to this event as well as it is always a nice way to give back to children in need.  Please continue to encourage your children to donate gifts for Chris Hani.   Thank you for your support.

Finally, a reminder about the annual 94.7 bicycle race and the impact that this will have on the Riversands Road on Thursday through Saturday.  This year only one lane will be closed on Riversands Blvd (between Erling – Mnandi Road) on the 14th to the 16th November 2019. We are expecting significant delays on these days due to the amount of traffic which will be channeled through one lane.  If you drive your children to school, please plan accordingly on your commute to school to avoid being late.

I wish all of you an enjoyable weekend.  Thank you for your continued support of the Middle School.

Dear AISJ Community,

The JHB Middle School Student Council, together with ES STUCO are hosting a Christmas Party at Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Soweto on the 16th of November.  This hospital is for children with an underprivileged background and it is also the third largest hospital in the world. For these children, Christmas looks different from yours!

We need your help to make this an amazing Christmas party for these hospitalized children. The Middle School needs to collect at least 150 presents for Middle Schoolers. The presents must be new and nicely wrapped.  The presents must be labelled with the gender and be appropriate for 11-14-year-old kids. The presents should cost around 150R and should be something you or your brother or sister would like too.

When you have your presents nicely wrapped and labelled you can drop your presents off at the Middle School Library HUB.  The deadline is the 15th of November. Please help us, because everybody deserves a Christmas with nice presents!  Thank you!
