ES Weekly Principal's update - October 28, 2016
Posted 28-10-2016 03:27PM

 Dear Parents,

Welcome back! I hope you had a lovely October holiday, and that this week has gone well for you. It’s been a very busy and exciting week in the Elementary School!  Our dedicated ES StuCo organized fun Spirit Days this week, but I must admit that PJ Day today was my favourite!

On Wednesday, we had an amazing Halloween celebration. We started off with our Spanish Team leading our Assembly and our Parent Association leading us with our afternoon Halloween parade and trick or treating. A huge thank you to Becci Monge and Noor Peek and all the room parents for their tireless work to make this a special day for our children.

Yesterday and today, AISJ has been hosting athletes for the ISSEA Volleyball Tournament. Yesterday everyone gathered in our Tree House Gym to cheer the teams. Each of the grades in the Elementary school also got to have a special “meet and greet” session with the athletes, and they cheered them in games. Its’ been a wonderful tournament, and a great opportunity for our students to see some exciting games, and what it means to be a good sport.

This afternoon we are also hosting the AISJ Junior Swim Gala! We have 10 boys and 12 girls from the Elementary School competing this afternoon against Crawford Fourways and Christ Church Preparatory Schools. Go AISJ! J

Finally, I would like to welcome Mrs. Barb Combrink back to school after her maternity leave. It feels good to have you back. A huge thank you to Mrs. Abby De Jager for dong such a wonderful job with the Pony class. We will miss you, and hope you come back very soon!

 Have a lovely weekend everyone.

Measures of Academic Progress (MAPs) Assessments

On Tuesday our Director of Teaching and Learning, Dr. Robert Evans held a workshop for parents of Grades 3-5 students to learn more about the Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) assessments. For parents who attended the session, they received their child’s progress report at that time. For those parents who were unable to attend the workshop, we have sent a hard copy home of your child’s results. There is also a “Quick Reference” guide to help you read the results.

ES Production: Disney’s Alice in Wonderland

Auditions are complete and rehearsals start next week. There was a great turn out for auditions and even greater talent. All this talent made it very difficult for Ms. Narina and Mr. Robert to cast the show, which is a fantastic thing.

Cast members found out the part they are playing on Thursday, and the first rehearsal is set for Tuesday, November 1, from 3:00-4:25pm. ALL performing cast members are to join in both rehearsals this coming week. A detailed rehearsal schedule will be given to students and emailed to parents next week.

This is going to be a great production!!!

 Maker Day- Saturday, November 12

We are holding our 2nd annual Family Maker Day on Saturday, November 12th from 9am-12pm in the Kgoro. Last year, we had over 100 families signup for this exciting event! The Maker Day is an event held to promote awareness of science, technology, engineering, and design-thinking activities. Through various challenges, students are encouraged to problem-solve, innovate, tinker and test out their ideas through various stations including robotics, electronics, circuit making, coding, e-textiles, Rube Goldberg machines and much more! The event is flexible in nature so students can choose what and how they would like to spend the morning. As this is a family event, parents are encouraged to be active participants in the activities and work with your child. Please note that this is not a “drop-off” event and parents must supervise their children. The event is open to all students from Grades PK-8. There are limited number of spots (and fills up quickly) and parents must register through this link in order to attend:  The Tuck Shop will be open to purchase drinks and snacks.

Travelling Book Shop Book Fair November 15-17

The Travelling Book Shop is visiting the ES Library Media Centre November 15-17, 2016. Students will be attending the book fair during scheduled times during the day. There is time reserved for parents to shop too. A schedule will be sent out next week.  The Travelling Book Shop accepts cash, debit and credit cards. Hope to see you all there!
