ES Principal's weekly update - November 11, 2016
Posted 11-11-2016 03:11PM

Dear Parents,

We hope you enjoyed parent/teacher conferences yesterday. Our teachers all find these conversations invaluable in gaining perspectives and insights from you about your child’s learning and growth, and we certainly hope you found them insightful also. I would like to thank our dedicated ES Faculty for the amount of time and effort that goes in to preparing for these conversations. We are truly lucky to have such a knowledgeable and dedicated group of teachers who deeply know your children across so many realms of development.

 South Africa Maths Challenge

For the very first time, the Elementary School at AISJ is planning on entering a team into the South Africa Maths Challenge. This is a fantastic opportunity for students in Grades 3-5 to be part of the AISJ Elementary Math team that will compete against other schools in our catchment area. This activity has been advertised as an ASA, and we still have spaces available for students who would like to be enriched and challenged with their mathematical thinking. It’s not too late to sign up!! If you would like your child to participate in this ASA, please email Charlotte Haines asap and she will register your child. The activity takes place on Thursday’s after school and will be run by Amina Saber and Sandra Cusack with the support of Jill Bellamy. We would love to have more students involved in this exciting opportunity. Click on the link for more information about the SA Maths Challenge.

 Maker Day- Tomorrow 9-12pm

Tomorrow we look forward to welcoming over 100 students and their families to our second annual Maker Day. A HUGE thank you to Mark Marshall, our ES Technology Integration Coach, and the other AISJ teacher volunteers for organising this amazing event, and for giving their time to ensure our students are able to have experiences in making, designing, problem solving, inventing and tinkering. I look forward to seeing many of you there tomorrow, and hope that the rain stays away!! Fingers crossed.

 Chris Hani Hospital Toy Drive

The Student Council is asking students to bring in gifts for the Chris Hani Hospital visit on November 19th. Thanks to all those families who have already donated gifts as we already have a growing pile. The toys that are donated over the coming weeks will be delivered to the hospital by our Student Council. Please indicate whether the gift is for a girl or a boy.  Gifts can be delivered to the media centre throughout next week. We would love to take as many gifts as possible to the hospital next Saturday.

Travelling Book Shop Book Fair November 15-17

The Travelling Book Shop is visiting the ES Library Media Centre November 15-17, 2016. Students will be attending the book fair during scheduled times during the day. There is time reserved for parents to shop too. A schedule will be sent out next week.  The Travelling Book Shop accepts cash, debit and credit cards. Hope to see you all there! If you are sending money to school with students, please ensure that it is placed into a clearly named, sealed envelope and that is inside a student’s backpacks.
