Elementary School Weekly Update 17 August 2018
Posted 17-08-2018 03:52PM

Dear Parents,

We are at the end of our first full week of school, and excited about how well this start has gone. Our children are learning new routines, making new friendships and demonstrating our CORE values; Caring, Open Mindedness, Risk Taking and Ethical. We hope your children are coming home full of new stories about their days at school.

Room Parents

Thanks to all the parents who have already volunteered to be a Room Parent for their child's class. Our Room Parents play an important role in building community and helping to organise ES events. This year, our elementary Parent Association Coordinators are Claire Hauxwell and Yvonne  Arnold-Oosenbrug. If you would be interested in becoming the room parent for your class, please email Claire at jhb-pa-escoordinator2@aisj-jhb.com by August 29th. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact her directly. Room Parent responsibilities can be found on the ES Daily Bulletin.

Next Wednesday morning, August 22nd there will be a Parent Association coffee morning taking place from 8:00am- 9:00am in the Parent Room. All AISJ parents are welcome to attend. Following the coffee, our Technology Integration Coach, Mark Marshall, will be available in T&L 2 to help any parents with accessing their child's website and using SeeSaw. The Activities Coordinator David Goetz will also be on hand to answer any co-curricular activity questions as they pertain to the elementary school.

Car Pick Up and Drop Off and Speeding

We have noticed some parents are dropping their children off in the lower carpark by the fourth grade classrooms. Although we understand that this is more convenient than using the ring road and swimming pool carpark, we would like to request that ALL children are dropped off at the swimming pool carpark. We do not have supervision in place in the lower carpark, and want to ensure that students are safe. Thanks for your support with this process.

A reminder that the speed limit on campus is 30km.

Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) in Grades 3-5

Every year, AISJ students in Grades 3-8 partake in an assessment called Measures of Academic Progress (MAP).   Students are administered this assessment twice throughout the year, in August and in May. The second assessment window will take place during May 16th - 25th. Students will take a total of three assessments: Reading, Math and Language Usage. For more detailed information on MAP testing in the ES, please read the parent letter on the ES Portal.

Student Council (Grades 3-5)

This year the Elementary Student Council will be sponsored by Lee Chadderton (Learning Support) and Karen Vicente (Grade 5).  Student Council will run like last year. We would like to have a representative from each homeroom class from Grades 3 - 5; instead of having everyone elect a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer and historian.  The nine members will then elect the president between themselves.

We kindly request your assistance in making this year's Student Council an even greater success.  If possible, we would like you to speak to your students and encourage them to run as representative for their class. The students who are keen to run for this position can come and see Mrs. Chadderton and Mrs. V, on the 22nd of August in Room ES17 so that we can guide them in their election campaign.  Each class will be holding their own elections during the week of the 27th August – 31st August, so that we can count the ballots on Friday the 31st August.  We will have one meeting per week on a Tuesday during lunch.

Classroom teachers will be posting more information about Student Council and the process involved on the classroom websites next week.

Elementary School Open House- Save the Date!

We look forward to welcoming you to our Open House Evening on Thursday, August 30 @ 6pm. More detailed information about the structure of the evening will be coming out in next Friday's newsletter. Child care will be available for those parents who are unable to arrange it.

AISJ Photo Day

School photos will be taking place on Thursday, August 23rd. Children are encouraged to wear smart clothing, and to bring a change of clothes if they would like. Photo Absenteeism Day will be on the 4th of February 2019 – this day will be for all new students and staff as well as any students or staff that missed the above listed days.

Parent Association Facebook Page

This is a note to all 3 JHB schools to let you know that the PA Facebook account has been shutdown. Instead the PA will now only be using the closed PA Facebook group page.

Here is the link to the closed group page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/aisjpajhb/

Parents who have received a notice that the PA Facebook page is closed should not be concerned or worried!!! They just need to join the closed group and they will continue to get messages from the PA!

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thank you very much!

There are 10 sponsor spots, so runners/walkers can try to get up to 10 people to sponsor them. All sponsors will need to pay cash, and they can pay as much money as they want.

EVERY RUNNER OR WALKER MUST HAVE 1 OR MORE SPONSORS!
