Elementary School Weekly Update 9 November 2018
Posted 09-11-2018 03:56PM

Dear Parents,

We are steaming ahead to Thanksgiving, and a lot is happening within the elementary school over the coming weeks. Thanks for taking the time to read through this newsletter so that you are well informed about all that is taking place.

Thank you to those who have already volunteered to help with Sports Day on Nov 21st. We have filled all of the slots for the first hour, and now need 8 more volunteers to fill the slots for the second hour (12;00 – 1:00). When volunteering, please be aware that there is a volunteers' briefing at 10:30 with Mrs Ferguson, that you would need to attend as well.

Thank you for your continued support.

Mrs Ferguson and Mr Keet

Chris Hani Toy Drive

We need your help to raise 400 presents to give to the sick children in Chris Hani hospital. This has been an annual service learning project, coordinated by our Student Council, and supported by the elementary and middle school community. Students can bring gifts to the library from next week. The gifts will be delivered on Saturday, Nov 17th. Thanks for your support of this important service learning initiative.

Digital Detox: Dealing with screen addiction in your home

Please note we have moved the ES Parent Coffee from Nov 6th to Nov 14th, as we have invited Dr. Brendan Belsham to speak on an important topic of screen time and screen addiction. This parent education workshop is open to all parents from PK-12 and I believe is an important issue facing all of us as parents, regardless of the age. We hope to see you there.

Book Fair

The Elementary School is hosting the Traveling Bookshop from 14 – 16 November in ES 7 (the empty Kindergarten classroom).  There will be a variety of books to choose from for children and adults.  Families can browse before and after school, however, the Bookshop will close at 14:00 on Friday, but you are welcome to come in before that, to browse.  Parents can also join their child's class during their scheduled time.  (Teachers will inform you about their time.)

How to view your Childs Co-Curricular Activities

  • Login to PowerSchool as a parent, select your child, and your CCA selections will appear under Grades and Attendance in the Navigation bar, as per below
  • Please send activity appropriate clothing and equipment, if needed, on the activity day.
  • All registered bus users will have bussing at the conclusion of the activity, Monday to Friday. Saturday activities are parent drop-off and pick-up.
  • Registrations for Season 2 are now closed and no further changes can be accommodated.
  • Activities do not run on early release days, school holidays, teacher professional development days and parent-teacher conference days.  Refer to your community calendar for these dates.

Apologies for the inconvenience, as with all new systems we will have some teething problems which we have learned from and will endeavour to deliver a better system next season.

Hillbrow Tour Sold Out

"This is Hillbrow" Tour

•    This guided 3km walk through Ponte City, Hillbrow and surrounding areas is one of a kind.

•    You'll get the opportunity to explore the inner-city of Johannesburg through an entirely new

stupendous views of the infamous Ponte Tower "The big Vodacom building".

•    You'll get an opportunity to engage and understand the history of Johannesburg and the

ultimate socio-economic impact apartheid and a young democracy had on these communities.

•    We'll end the experiences off by having some traditional cuisine where you'll meet wonderful

people and engage in interesting conversation.

•    The tour lasts for 3 hours (plus traveling time), starting at AISJ at 8.45am and returning at

      approximately 2pm.

Milestone Fundraiser

Hello everyone!

We are excited to provide you with all the details about the upcoming Milestone and AISJ concert on:

Tuesday 27th of November from 4-6pm in the Theater.

Milestone and AISJ Concert

One of our Service Learning Partner schools, Milestone Primary needs our help!

  • The children of Milestone Primary School need a new school. After 19 years of operation, Milestone is closing down, the land that the school is built on has been purchased by a developer, and the school is being evicted.

  • We are raising funds for a new Non-Profit Organization and the innovative sustainable school called The Solar School to accommodate all of the Milestone students. With the help of our community networks, corporate sponsorship, and our ongoing school support we can continue to collaborate with Olievenhoutbosch students to learn and grow together.

How to support?

Join us on the 27th of November at 4:00 pm in the AISJ Theatre for a showcase of AISJ Elementary and Middle School students, the AISJ staff choir and two recording artists (Omega Bugembe Okello from USA and Velemseni from Swaziland)

If your child / children would to take part in this initiative, please complete the Parent Permission form on PowerSchool by Wednesday 14th November

Tickets can be purchased at R80.00 from the ES, MS office and in the Parent Room.

We look forward to seeing you at this amazing concert!
