Elementary School Weekly Update 11 January 2019
Posted 11-01-2019 03:48PM

Dear Parents,

Welcome back to the second semester. I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful and relaxing holiday with family and friends. This Wednesday, we welcomed 25 new students and families to the elementary school. On behalf of the entire elementary school, we welcome you to our community.

We have loved the excitement and energy your children have brought with them back to school. In the classrooms and on the playground, students have been sharing their holiday stories and enjoying reuniting with friends.

Please be reminded that next Friday, January 18th is an early release day. School will finish at 1:30pm and there are no CCA's for students.

Parent Invitation to Film Screening: "ANGST: RAISING AWARENESS AROUND ANXIETY"

All AISJ parents are invited to attend a screening of a newly released film called "Angst". The film addresses the complex and prevalent issues of childhood anxiety and its impact on our children's social, emotional and academic development. Our Elementary and Middle School faculty will be watching this together next Wednesday during PGCT. We are also holding two PARENT SCREENINGS of this film on the following days:

ü  Wednesday, January 23rd @ 8am: AISJ Theatre

ü  Friday, January 25th @ 8am: AISJ Theatre

Film Synopsis and Website

Producers Scilla Andreen and Karin Gornick have one goal: to start a global conversation and raise awareness around anxiety. Through candid interviews, they utilize the power of film to tell the stories of many kids and teens who discuss their anxiety and its impacts on their lives and relationships, as well as how they've found solutions and hope. The film also includes a special interview with Michael Phelps, a mental health advocate and one of the greatest athletes of all-time. In addition, the documentary provides discussions with mental health experts about the causes of anxiety and its sociological effects, along with the help, resources and tools available to address the condition. https://angstmovie.com/promote/

Parent Education Workshop in Math: Monday, February 11th, 7:45am-10:00am

We are pleased to be able to offer further parent education in Math. As many of you know, we have recently published a Parent Numeracy Guide, and we are now wanting to hold a more hands on parent workshop to provide insights into the way your children are learning math in the ES. The workshop will allow parents the opportunity to observe math being taught in the classrooms, as well as breakout sessions that will provide information on varying developmental aspects of our programme.

Parent Education Workshop with internationally renowned writing consultant Matt Glover

We are fortunate to have Matt Glover return to AISJ to work with our teachers on developmentally appropriate writing instruction and best classroom practices. Matt will be offering a Parent Workshop on the importance of developing both the compositional and conventional aspects of writing and the help parents understand the difference between the two. He will share student examples, along with current research around best instructional practices in schools. Matt is a highly engaging speaker, who has authored many books on writing development and teaching practices. He has worked in many leading international schools throughout the world, and I strongly encourage all of you to find time to attend this workshop. The workshop will be held in the ES Library on February 21st, from 2:10pm- 3:30pm. Child care will be provided for those children who are not in CCA's. We hope you can make it.

Grade 3-5 Camp Information Meetings

Our students in Grades 3-5 are looking forward to their upcoming camp experiences this year. Next week we will hold parent information sessions for Grades 4-5 with Grade 3 the following week. These are important sessions for parents to attend so that you have all the information needed to support your child as they head off on their camping experiences in a couple of weeks.

Season 3 Co-Curricular Sign Ups

Season 3 online sign-ups open this coming Monday, January 14th -25th. We ask that parents think carefully about their children's choices as no changes will be able to be made after January 25th. It is challenging for the Activities Office to have parents requesting changes after the final date, as it impacts coaching, staffing and personnel decisions. We ask for your support and understanding in this process.

To sign up for Co-Curricular Activities, parents must log into their PowerSchool accounts and access the CCA button found on the left side of the site. Information on the various activities on offer can be found here. Please remember that CCA's are only on offer to students in Grades 1-5.

Hosting Help Needed

The activities office is hosting 3 major international events over three weeks at the end of January and early February.  We seek willing families to help provide beds for the visiting students.  Please see the below three links for more information and requirements.  If any of the requirements seem too much for you please reach out to the Activities Office as we can help find a solution.  Our priority is to find the beds!  Please be invited to help out and show the AISJ Eagle spirit!
