Elementary School Weekly Update 15 February 2019
Posted 15-02-2019 03:17PM

Dear Parents,

On Monday, we held a very well attended parent education session on math. Thanks to all of the parents who came out, and all the teachers who were willing to open up their classrooms and students to allow parents to come in and observe. We had very positive feedback on this session and are already beginning to plan something similar for literacy in the future.

Yesterday we were fortunate to have Woodrock Animal Shelter visit our school. Your children enjoyed cuddling and playing with the dogs. A huge thanks to our Parent Association for arranging this event and to all in the community who brought in donations for Woodrock. It was extremely well received. Below is a photo of our Grade 2 students presenting the donations to Woodrock.

Parent Education Session with Writing Consultant Matt Glover

If you choose one parent education session to come to this year, choose this one. Matt is an extremely engaging presenter who is highly knowledgable in his field. It would be great to have as many parents attend this workshop as possible.

Student Led Conferences

On March 7th, 2019 the Elementary School will hold Student-Led Conferences. This is not a normal school day. There will be no classes and students should ONLY come to school for their scheduled conference time, returning home afterwards with their parents.  All students and parents are expected to attend Student Led Conferences. More detailed information on SLC's can be found on the ES Portal. To sign up for your child's conference you will need to follow the instructions below:

Thur, Feb 21- 22:  Parents with two or more elementary age children can pre-book SLC conference times by calling the ES Office 087 809 1804/087 809 1871. This helps to ensure back to back conference times.

Mon, Feb 25- Mar 5:  All ES parents will be able to sign up for a SLC time through PowerSchool (see the conference button on the left hand side of the home page once logged in).

PK/Kindergarten Assembly- February 28th @ 8am

Apologies for the incorrect assembly date given in last weekes newsletter. PK and Kindergarten will be showcasing their learning on Feb 28th. The next Specialist assembly will be on March 28th. Sorry for any confusion caused.

International Mother Language Day

February 21st is International Mother Language Day.  We are planning on having language stations at the American international School of Johannesburg (JHB campus) where students in elementary school can learn about new languages or different things about languages they already know.  Thanks to all the parent volunteers for helping to make this day a special celebration of the importance of our native language.

Fundraiser for High School Prom Event

Season 3 activities begin again next Tuesday, February 19th through until May 3rd/4th.

AISJ offers a holiday program that runs in the June/July holidays.  This program runs for 3 weeks from June 3rd to June 21st.  You can do 1, 2 or all 3 weeks.  It is a wonderful place to send your child should you not be leaving South Africa straight after school closes for the June/July break.  The program starts at 09:00am and finishes at 1:00pm each day and the cost includes door to door bussing, engaging workshops, all supplies, snacks and a field trip each Friday which includes packed refreshments.  This year the field trips will be Bounce, The Monte Casino Bird Gardens and Ice-skating (Gr. 1 and up) and PlayScapes (Pre-k and kinder).

To register your child/ren, please log onto Powerschool and click on forms/signups, this will take you to the Johannesburg Campus Winter School Request form.  Please note that registration starts in February and runs until May 24th.  Closer to the start of Winter School you will receive an information letter regarding the program.

Please contact Nikki Kaplan, in Middle School, by emailing her on nkaplan@aisj-jhb.com should you require any further details or have any questions.

AISJ Board of Directors - Meet the Candidates

Please join us for an opportunity to meet and hear in person from candidates for the AISJ Board of Directors election. Elected Directors will serve a three-year term and are instrumental in providing fiduciary oversight and defining the strategic direction of AISJ.
