Elementary School Weekly Update 5 April 2019
Posted 05-04-2019 03:40PM

Dear Parents,

With Family Fun Day postponed until next weekend, it looks like we are in for a wet weekend. Thanks to our Parent Association for all their organisation for FFD. So much work has gone into planning this event, and with this weather I know it has created even more. We hope you are all able to come and support this event next weekend.

Lightening Procedures

As many of you will know, we have had many lightening alerts at school these past two weeks. We are using an alarm system which alerts us to lightning strikes (both ground and cloud-cloud strikes) within a 15km proximity of the AISJ campus. The alarm system is raised by the sound of one siren call, which can be heard campus wide. The all clear signal is given once we have been lightening free within a 15km radius for 30 minutes, given by the sound of two repeated sirens.

Lightning strikes are a very real threat to child and adult safety and something we are taking extremely seriously as a school. Once a lightning alert has been raised, we enact our 'Stay Put' procedures. During a 'Stay Put' alert, all students and adults on campus must seek shelter immediately and remain indoors until the 'All Clear' signal is given. Intermittent announcements are given through our PA system to remind all on campus. PARENTS SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO PICK UP THEIR CHILD FROM CLASS DURING A STAY PUT ALERT.

We would like to remind all parents that if they are on campus during a lightning alert, they are to seek shelter immediately and use the sheltered walk ways on route to the Parent Room to wait for the 'All Clear' signal to be given. Your child will be brought to either the Gould's Gym or the top of the ES Steps once the released from class.

Late Bus Update

Thanks to everyone for their patience as we have implemented new systems for our 4:30pm bus. Monday afternoon was extremely challenging as we had to deal with lightning alerts which caused a massive delay in dismissal times. The rest of the week has gone smoothly and I would like to thank our Transportation Department and Jill Bellamy, for their work in ensuring that the 4:30pm bus procedures are smooth and that our children are getting home safely. If you have questions or concerns regarding bussing, please email Tumi Masemola tmasemola@aisj-jhb.com, or Jill Bellamy jibellamy@aisj-jhb.com.
