Greetings from the Pretoria campus!
This year has gotten off to a great start here on the Pretoria campus. One major focus throughout the year, but particularly at the beginning of the school year, is building community in our classrooms, on our busses, and throughout our school. Community building at an individual level is an essential role for the school counselor. Through helping students to be involved we hope to inspire connectedness, belonging, and the sharing of the diverse talents that all students and families bring to our community. If your student is facing challenges in this area, may I highlight a few ideas that might help?
One simple first step is to be open to new possibilities. Whether you are new to our community or returning to AISJ, the new school year offers opportunities to try new things. Maybe there’s an ASA you have always wanted to try or a new positive, healthy habit you want to start? There are a multitude of possibilities, so the first step is to choose.
Keep the lines of communication open. Have regular conversations about school and encourage your child to talk openly with you, teachers, counselors, and other school staff about their ideas, needs, and worries.
Finally, as parents, continue to stay involved in our school activities. It was wonderful to see such a great representation from our diverse community at our International Day and parents went above and beyond to make it a memorable event. We have many more events throughout the school year, so continue to read regular communication and stay in contact with your Parents Association. We look forward to seeing you at future events.
As always, if you feel as though you need extra support, please reach out to your school counselors. We are happy to help.
