Advisory

Philosophy

Advisory is a crucial element of our middle school. Entering middle school years, students have a need for meaningful interactions and social and emotional support.

Our Advisory Program follows the Circle of Power and Respect (CPR) model. Our Advisory Program is designed to build relationships and establish trust with advisors and peers. It is a special time to work on emotional safety through building connections to responsible and caring adults. Advisors advocate for their students and help them grow academically, socially and emotionally. In addition, Advisory sessions focus on building a sense of belonging and creating a positive school climate. It is our belief that once the students’ emotional needs are met, cognitive development and learning takes place.

Our Advisory groups meet daily for 35 minutes first thing in the morning except for Wednesdays, our short days when students meet in Advisory for a five-minute check-in. We also meet at the end of every day for a check-in.

Advisory follows the following format:

Daily News:

Read by students as they come into the room.

Greeting:

Everyone greets and is greeted.

Sharing:

Students have the opportunity to share what’s happening in their lives, their opinions and preferences, and often to ask questions and make comments in response to what others share.

Activity:

Games, jokes, songs, rhythms, and other activities provide a chance to play, ponder, express or investigate together.

Some of the themes our students explore in Advisory include the following:
