Learning Support

Learning Support Mission Statement

The purpose of K-12 Learning Support is to ensure that students who are English Language Learners and students who have learning differences receive the support they need to reach academic and social-emotional success within an inclusive community.

Middle School English Language Support

AISJ Pretoria students are supported to develop English language proficiency while working with grade-level content material. The support teacher assigned to the grade level works closely with the classroom teacher to provide the student with the necessary tools and strategies to be able to access the curriculum. This allows students to participate fully in classroom activities while receiving explicit language instruction. At AISJ we encourage the use of the Mother Tongue to enhance learning and express the value we place on celebrating the diverse languages and cultures of our students.

Middle School Learning Support

The Learning Support program at AISJ Pretoria provides a continuum of services where students are fully involved in all aspects of classroom learning. The support teacher assigned to the grade level works collaboratively with the subject teacher to provide a personalized learning environment where the needs of ‘all’ students are being met. Students’ progress is carefully monitored and instructional decisions are based upon assessment outcomes and individual needs.  A key component of the support provided is to equip students with the necessary strategies and tools to self-advocate and to take ownership for their learning.

The Middle School Child Support Team (CST) is comprised of the learning support teachers, classroom teachers, specialist teachers, administrators, and counselor. The CST determines student enrollment in Middle School Learning Support Services. Once a student is identified as needing support services, the CST may, if deemed appropriate, recommend an external psycho-educational assessment, or administer additional testing internally in order to better assist the student’s educational needs.

The learning support teacher and classroom teacher in collaboration with the parents and other professionals working with the student develop an Individual Learning Plan as indicated by a psycho-educational assessment. This plan is designed to provide the student with direct support in curricular areas, as well as to teach compensatory strategies geared toward independent learning. Each student’s individualized goals are reviewed bi-annually.

AISJ is committed to providing the best possible learning environment for all students. As far as possible students are supported within the mainstream classroom. However, where targeted intervention is required students may receive instruction in a small group or 1:1 for a specific period of time.
