Dear Students and Parents,

On behalf of our Faculty and Staff, I welcome you to the International School of Johannesburg’s Pretoria Campus. This Handbook is designed to acquaint you with the more formal aspects of our school and to help you to become familiar with our various procedures, protocols, and systems. If anything you wish to know about us is not included, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s Class/Advisory Teacher, the Office Staff or the Principal.

By way of an introduction to what you can expect from us I will share with you our stimulating vision statement; Inspire learning to build our better world.

The Elementary years of school lay the foundation for a life of learning. During these years, we work together with our students to help them achieve many important milestones. Visiting our classrooms, you will observe welcoming, confident students inquiring and collaborating. Our curriculum is designed to meet the diverse needs of all our students. Our literacy program supports the Science of Reading. We aim to inspire our learners; to create students with confidence and fluency in the reading and writing processes.

Our mathematics program is designed to promote problem-solving and mathematical reasoning. Emphasis is placed on developing strong number sense in our students, whilst ensuring that they learn to use multiple strategies and can explain their mathematical thinking and reasoning.

Specialist teachers provide lessons in art, music, physical education, and Spanish. The latter beginning in Grade 1. We have a dedicated learning support team which includes teachers and a counselor and which provides for students with particular needs in academic and social and emotional domains as well as support for English Language Learners (ELL).

We recognize the importance of parent-school partnership and encourage parental involvement in their child’s educational journey.

AISJ Pretoria extends into a full Middle School. We know that middle school students are at a unique time in their lives; a time when they are seeking greater independence and exploring their identity. As such, we are committed to offering learning experiences relevant to the lives of adolescents. Through a safe, nurturing learning environment supported by a caring team of teachers, our program provides each student with opportunities to inquire, explore and to develop confidence. Our stimulating academic program strives to help students make connections to the world around them and to equip them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and understanding. We offer core academic subjects, physical education, a choice of two world languages and a variety of elective courses which include multi-media, chorus, robotics, band, drama, and art.

Our annual “Classroom without Walls” program offered from Grade 4 to Grade 8, enables students and teachers to create enduring memories and friendships through physical and intellectual challenges.

We also offer a diverse co-curricular after school activities program for Grades 1-8.

Thank you for choosing AISJ Pretoria. I hope you enjoy your membership of a community of learners committed to being the very best we can be.
