Work Experience Program

Background

AISJ is a leading international school in the world and the premier school in Africa. We are a Pre-K-Grade 12 school with campuses in Johannesburg and Pretoria. We provide a world-class education to nearly 1100 students from around the globe. Our student body represents more than 100 nationalities and we value being a diverse, inclusive community with our ethos and actions. Our school community, the host country of South Africa, and the international community provide invaluable potential for us to be enriched by the perspectives of others.

We believe contributing positively to society is our responsibility, and as a school, we strive to make positive contributions in South Africa. One of the ways we do this is by providing quality work experience and training opportunities for South African young adults. South Africa’s unemployment rate is one of the highest in the world, and South African young adults, in particular, face a number of challenges related finding and keeping their first job. AISJ’s work experience program provides an opportunity for South African young adults to improve their career prospects by bridging the gap between matriculation and the workplace and/or further education.

Classroom Work Experience Position Overview

The work experience program provides South African young adults who aspire to work in education with the opportunity to gain skills, experience, and training towards a future career. Work experience participants observe and assist in Pre-K-Grade 5 classrooms while gaining exposure to an international school setting. They are provided with training and mentorship to work with children in a classroom setting under the guidance of a lead teacher or teachers. In addition to classroom experience, the participants gain valuable experience working in a cross-cultural setting with students, parents, and teachers from around the world.

Upon completion of the work experience program, the participant may apply for a traineeship in which trainees continue working at the school while pursuing teaching qualifications at a recognized institution in a bursary model supported by the school. Traineeships are limited and highly competitive.
